GVSU Track & Field Competes at Hillsdale GINA Relays

HILLSDALE, Mich. – Grand Valley State track & field concludes action at the 49th Annual Hillsdale "GINA" Relays with several provisional marks and first-place finishes.
 
For the Laker women, who ranked third in the latest USTFCCCA Division II national rankings, Jamie Roberts in the pole vault championship competition, Whitney Bice, Skylar Schoen, and Michaela Lawcock in the pole vault open bracket, and Sarah Cullip and Katelyn Cliff in the 3000 meter steeplechase championship bracket all hit provisional marks, while the fifth-ranked Laker men had Wuoi Mach and Ricky Perez in the 1500 meter championship competition earn provisional marks.
 
In the pole vault championship competition, Roberts placed fourth with a mark of 3.88 meters, while Whitney Bice took first-place in the pole vault open competition with a vault of 3.76 meters. In the same event, Schoen and Lawcock tied for third with marks of 3.61 meters. In the 3k steeplechase championship, Cullip placed 15th with a time of 10:57.85, and Cliff took 222nd with a time of 11:09.00. In the men's 1500 meter championship, Mach finished the race with a time of 3:48.99 to place sixth and Perez ran a time of 3:49.93 to take 11th.
 
While they didn't hit any NCAA qualifying marks, plentyLaker track & field athletes who earned top five finishes in their respective events. On the women's side, Sarah Talbott placed first with a mark of 5.75 meters in the long jump open, while Jessica Tea-Hui, Kathryn Mills and Alisha Weaver all tied for third in the open high jump. In the running events, Alison Work (2:14.31) took third and Katie Shaheen (2:14.81) fifth in the 800 meter, Rachel Bendewald (4:41.03) placed third in the 1500 meter open, Kylie Hicks (1:04.00) took third and Jessica O'Connell (1:04.14) fourth in the 400 meter hurdles championship, and Brittany terry (59.14) placed fifth in the 400 meter championship. Finally, McKenna Mattson (15.31) placed eighth and Hicks (15.61) 10th in the 100 meter hurdle championship.
 
Over on the men's side, Odell McFarland placed third in both the 400 meter dash (49.41) and in the 200 meter dash (22.21). Torben Hoffmeyer placed third in the 1500 meter open race with a time of 3:59.88, while Tyler Pavigla (55.55) placed fourth and Zakry O'Brien (56.32) fifth in the 400 meter hurdle championship, and Gary Hickman (15.02) placed fourth and Kaleb Radke (15.69) seventh in the 110 meter hurdle championship. The 4x100 meter relay team of Luke Vasilion, Gerald McGee, O'Brien, and Jesse Schwartz placed second with a time of 41.88 in the event.
 
Grand Valley State returns to action in the 2015 GLIAC Championships from Wednesday (Apr. 25) to Friday (May 1) at Hillsdale College.
