Complete ResultsALLENDALE, Mich. – In the annual GVSU-SVSU Battle of the Valleys, the Grand Valley State men's and women's track & field teams dominated against the visiting Cardinals in the Kelly Family Sports Center.

After freezing temperatures a majority of the events from the GVSU Lacrosse/Track & Field Stadium into the Kelly Center, the Laker men took it to the Cardinals by the score of 90-56, while the women cruised to a 95-49 win over their rivals.

Setting the first NCAA automatic qualifying mark of the season for the Lakers was
Darien Thornton in the hammer throw. Thornton, who earned All-America honors in the weight throw during the indoor season with a mark of 21.38 meters, it a mark of 66.69 meters, just one meter shy of setting a new school record. The junior also hit a provisional mark in the shot put with a throw of 16.69 meters.

Also setting provisional marks for the Grand Valley State men were
Mike Moon in the discus (3rd, 46.28m) and in the hammer (2nd, 57.19m),
Chris Saikalis in the shot put (1st, 17.59m), and
Blake Donson (1st, 51.06m) and
Jay Lechner (2nd, 46.63m) in the discus.

The Grand Valley State women also scored three provision qualifiers, all coming in the pole vault.
Jamie Roberts,
Jennifer Schornak, and
Alexandra Kitz all hit a mark of 3.65 meters, but Roberts was given first place after cleanly clearing the 3.65 mark, while Schornak needed a second attempt and Kitz a third.

The Laker track & field teams will be back in action next Thursday (Apr. 2) through Saturday (Apr. 4) when they travel to Charleston, Ill. for the Eastern Illinois Invitational, hosted by Eastern Illinois University.
