#1 Lakers Dispatch Malone in GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals, 6-0

The second matchup this season between the Grand Valley State women's soccer team and Malone ended up mirroring the first, a 10-0 Laker victory in Canton, Ohio on Sept. 27th.

Grand Valley scored a pair of goals in the early minutes of the match and never looked back, adding four more goals while throttling the Pioneer's offense, allowing just one shot on defense.

Aiming to make a quick start after lethargic openings against Walsh and Ferris State in the two most recent games, GVSU got the early momentum they needed in the fifth minute, as senior midfielder Katie Klunder would finish a beautiful cross from the baseline by Tracey McCoy for her eighth goal of the season.

Just two minutes later, junior forward Jayma Martin scored her sixth goal of the season off of a quick passing combo from Shannon Quinn to Kendra Stauffer to Martin for the flush to double the early lead.

From there, the Lakers relaxed a bit, and lessened the pressure on the Pioneers.

"I think we were OK today, in the first 10 minutes we were fine, but after we found those first couple goals, we kind of got lazy, and seemed disinterested," GVSU head coach Jeff Hosler said.

Just when it seemed the Lakers had gone into cruise control, the team was able to create some good looks on the goal before the end of the half, converting a pair of goals.

In the 34th minute, Marti Corby fired a low blast from outside the box to the far side of the net, beating the keeper and giving her 20 goals on the season. Just one minute later, in the 35th minute, sophomore forward Gabriella Mencotti scored her eighth goal off of a quick combo with Corby and Stauffer.

"For the first time in a while, the girls refocused themselves, and we found some great goals to finish the half with some great quick combinations," Hosler said. "It was really good to finish the half like that."

The Lakers used an overpowering 40-1 shot advantage to put near constant pressure on Malone.  After assisting on three other Laker goals, Stauffer netted one for herself in the 59th minute, dribbling past two defenders on the baseline before pushing a low shot to the far post to beat the keeper and give her 12 goals on the season.

"Kendra was doing what she does, taking players on, being eager to get in behind the backline," Hosler said. "When Kenny's active, and on the ball, and wants to get that goal, she's very hard to stop."

Rounding out the scoring in the 69th minute was freshman forward Samantha Riga. After Malone goalkeeper Leah Rauscher blocked a shot by Lindsay Ebeling, Riga elevated and knocked in her 5th goal of the season with a well placed header.

"I thought we did pretty well from an offensive efficiency standpoint, statistically it's very similar to our last game against Malone.," Hosler added. "I think we hit four posts, and I think they cleared four shots off of the end line with a defender, so you convert half of those and it's a more lopsided game."

Without facing much pressure from the Pioneer offense, freshman goalkeeper Emily Maresh earned the shutout in goal without needing to make a save.

Stauffer finished with one goal and three assists. Klunder, Martin, Riga and Mencotti added solo goals, while Corby had a goal and an assist. Shannon Quinn chipped in two assists from the defensive half.

With the win, Grand Valley advances to the GLIAC Tournament semifinals, where it will face #4 seed Ohio Dominican on Friday at 7 pm. Preceding that game will be the semifinal matchup between #3 seed Ashland and #2 seed Ferris State at 4 p.m. Both matches will be hosted by Grand Valley and will be held at GVSU Soccer Field.
