It didn't take long for the 2015 Laker senior class to make an impact in Sunday's Senior Day game against Northern Michigan.
Â
Senior
Katie Klunder dished off a pass to
Marti Corby that Corby netted for her 18
th goal of the season, just four minutes into the game.
Â
Two minutes later, Klunder added one of her own, her seventh goal of the season, off of a penetrating drive by junior
Kendra Stauffer.
Â
"I thought we played really well, it was another quick start for us," GVSU head coach
Jeff Hosler said. "It's so crucial to have that ability to get that goal, and finish your chances. That was our best possession half of the season."
Â
From that moment on, Senior Day belonged to Stauffer, who scored at the 46, 49, 57 and 63 minute marks for the first four goal game of her career.
Â
Stauffer, the Laker's second leading scorer heading into the game, pulled out her full arsenal in this game, scoring off a header, chipping the ball over a charging goalie twice, and dribbling between two defenders before beating the keeper for the finish.
Â
"Kenny was special today, I mean, she was fantastic. To see her get on the end of things to see her create and take on players on her own, the number of ways she does it shows how dangerous she is as a player. I'm really happy for her, because that creativity is really starting to pay off for her. "
Â
After Stauffer scored her fourth goal of the game, the Lakers struck once more in the 75
th minute, as freshman
Hannah Phommavongsa fed senior
Katie Bounds a cross right in front of the goal mouth. Bounds flushed the pass for her fourth goal of the season, and a fitting end to Senior Day.
Â
Before the game began, the seniors were recognized at midfield. The class consists of
Katie Bounds,
Katie Klunder,
Maddison Reynolds and
Katy Woolley. Despite the ceremony, the Lakers stuck to the game plan from the beginning whistle.
Â
"Senior Day is always difficult, because it's an emotional week," Hosler said. "I thought our team did a good job preparing for the match like any other game. I liked to see Klunder be involved in both scoring plays early as a senior, seeing Bounds finish on our final goal, all those things make a big difference into the lasting impression we take away from Senior Day."
Â
On defense, the Lakers got another strong effort from the defense led by senior
Katy Woolley at center back. Notching the team's 4
th straight shutout, the Lakers defense yielded just two shots on goal, which freshman goalkeeper
Emily Maresh saved to notch her 7
th shutout this season.
Â
"We've been able to apply a lot of high pressure through all three lines during this stretch. We've also been possessing the ball, knocking the balls around, and that puts us in a good position in controlling the pace, defensively. (Paula)Hafner had a hard time finding the ball today, all three of our center backs did a great job cutting out any balls that were played into her."
Â
The Lakers return on Friday, when they travel to North Canton, Ohio to take on Walsh University. Kick off is set for 4 p.m.Â
