GRANDVILLE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team faced a tall task in taking on perennial GLIAC power Northwood on Sunday (Apr. 6). The Lakers took two of three doubles matches, but Northwood took control in singles for the 6-3 victory.
The loss drops the Lakers to 15-7 overall with a 7-3 record in the GLIAC. Northwood moves to 9-3 overall with a 5-1 record in the conference. It was a battle of regionally-ranked opponents, as the Lakers were eighth in the region in the latest ITA Tennis rankings, while Northwood was fifth in the region and 37th in the country.
GVSU will be back in action on Tuesday, April 15th, against Ferris State.
In doubles action, the Lakers picked up victories from the team of Quinn Sylow and Jack Heiniger in the No. 2 flight (8-6) and from Andrew Darrell and Billy Heckman at No. 3 doubles (8-5). Andrew Bole and Francis Bertrand fell to the 17th-ranked doubles team in the country for GVSU's only loss in doubles.
In singles, Northwood was able to take control of the match, winning five of six singles flights.
The Lakers were able to get a victory in the No. 3 flight from Heckman, who won 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. Andrew Bole took his opponent to three sets in a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 (7-0) loss.
Francis Bertrand battled valiantly against the 16th-ranked singles player in the country, taking Jean Menard to three sets, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
