Allendale, Mich. - The Grand Valley State softball team fell in a GLIAC doubleheader on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 19) in Allendale to visiting Ohio Dominican. Both teams sit near the top of the GLIAC standings, but ODU pulled out wins of 7-2 and 1-0 over the Lakers.
After Saturday's contests, Grand Valley State is in third place in the league with a 12-4 GLIAC record. The Lakers are 23-8 overall. Ohio Dominican moves to 18-4 in the conference, good for second place, while the Panthers are 22-24 on the year.
Before the first game on Saturday, the five Laker seniors were honored during a special `Senior Day' ceremony. In between the games, 24-year head coach Doug Woods was also honored, as he announced in mid-March that he would retire at the end of the season.
Ohio Dominican struck first in game one, taking a 2-0 lead on an RBI single and a run-scoring groundout. Trailing 3-0 in the third, Grand Valley State closed the gap. Freshman Jenna Lenza ripped a one-out single to right field. Two batters later, senior Briauna Taylor crushed a two-run homer to dead center field, cutting the deficit to 3-2. It was her 10th homer of the season and the 32nd of her four-year career.
The Lakers were unable to get much more going off of ODU starting pitcher Rachael Stanzel, who leads the GLIAC in victories this season. She was also helped out by a four-run seventh inning, as Ohio Dominican's lead swelled to 7-2.
GVSU starter Sara Andrasik took the loss, allowing seven runs in 6.2 innings in the circle. Andrasik is 10-5 on the season. Stanzel picked up her 15th win by allowing two runs on six hits.
Briauna Taylor tallied three of the Lakers' five base hits, going 3-for-3 with the two-run homer. Lenza and sophomore McKenze Supernaw (double) had the other GVSU hits.
Ohio Dominican went back to Stanzel in game two, while the Lakers used junior Lauren Gevaart, who entered the game with a 10-0 record. Gevaart was coming off a 10-inning complete game victory on Friday over Tiffin, when the righty tossed 134 pitches, 105 of which were strikes.
Gevaart was surprisingly strong after such a lengthy outing the day prior, but the Panthers were able to get one run on the board. Second baseman Allie Hinton led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo homer to left field for the 1-0 ODU lead. Unfortunately for Grand Valley State, that is all Stanzel and the Panthers would need.
In fact, neither team did much offensively the rest of the way, as Gevaart would only allow a fourth inning single the remainder of the game. GVSU did get a leadoff single in the seventh inning from senior Miranda Cleary, but Ohio Dominican ended the rally (and the game) with a 1-6-3 double play.
Gevaart (10-1) took the first loss of her Laker career, but certainly deserved a better fate. She allowed just two hits and one walk, while fanning nine Panthers batters, including six K's in the first three innings. Stanzel (16-13) earned the win, allowing just three base hits and recording 11 groundball outs.
Cleary, senior Tonya Calkins, and freshman Janae Langs all recorded singles for the Lakers. GVSU left three runners on base, while Ohio Dominican stranded just a pair of runners.
As the schedule currently stands, those were the final home games of the 2014 season for Grand Valley State. The Lakers head to Hillsdale, Findlay, and Ferris State for conference doubleheaders next weekend (Apr. 25-27).
