SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team kept itself atop the GLIAC standings with a tight 5-4 victory over Lake Superior State on Sunday (Mar. 23), coming back from the upper peninsula with a pair of victories on the weekend.
The win moves GVSU To 12-5 overall on the year and 4-1 in the GLIAC, while Lake Superior State is now 9-9 overall with a 2-3 record in the conference.
GVSU will now be back in the friendly confines of West Michigan for the remainder of its regular season schedule, beginning a six-match homestand with a 9 p.m. contest against Walsh on Thursday (Mar. 27) at Ramblewood in Grandville.
The match against LSSU was tight throughout, as GVSU claimed a 2-1 lead after doubles. The team of Andrew Bole and Francis Bertrand won an 8-4 match at No. 1 doubles, while Billy Heckman and Andrew Darrell won an 8-4 match in the No. 3 flight of doubles.
Going in to singles, Bole picked up his second victory of the day with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the No. 5 flight, while Quinn Sylow won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 6 singles.
In what was the deciding flight of the match, Jack Heiniger came from behind to win a 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 match at No. 4 singles.
