GRAND RAPIDS, Mich./KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team went up against a formidable pair of opponents on Wednesday (Mar. 19) but came up short in both, falling 5-4 to NAIA 10th-ranked Aquinas and 6-1 to Division I foe Western Michigan on the road.
The Lakers are now 10-5 overall on the season, while Aquinas is 12-1 and Western Michigan is 9-8.
GVSU will be back in action for GLIAC play on Saturday (Mar. 22) with a 10 a.m. match at Michigan Tech.
In the first match of the day, GVSU got out to a 2-1 lead in doubles, as the team of Jack Heiniger and Quinn Sylow picked up an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles and the team of Andrew Heuerman and Andrew Darrell won a 9-7 match at the No. 3 flight.
In singles, GVSU picked up two victories, both of which went to three sets. Heiniger (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) won his No. 4 flight singles match and Sylow won a 2-6, 7-6, 10-7 match at No. 5 singles as they both went 2-0 on the day after their earlier doubles victory.
Later in the evening, GVSU traveled to Kalamazoo to take on Division I opponent Western Michigan, but the Broncos took the doubles decision by sweeping those three matches and won five of six singles matches. The lone victory for the Lakers was at the No. 6 flight, where Michael Kaye won a 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (9) match.
