Men's Tennis Splits on the Road

LIMA, Ohio/MARION, Ind. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team took to the road for a pair of matches on Saturday (Mar. 15), falling to Northwestern Ohio, 5-4, before picking up a 7-2 victory over Indiana Wesleyan.

The Lakers are now 10-3 on the season, while Northwestern Ohio, ranked 17th in NAIA, moves to 13-1 overall and Indiana Wesleyan falls to 9-7 overall.

Against the Racers of Northwestern Ohio, the Lakers actually led 2-1 after doubles, with GVSU picking up victories at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The team of Quinn Sylow and Jack Heiniger picked up a hard-fought 9-8 (9-7) victory in the second flight, while Andrew Darrell and Billy Heckman earned a convincing 8-1 victory at the third flight.

In singles, the Lakers dropped two flights which went to three sets, narrowly missing out on the victory. Heckman picked up a victory at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 7-5 win, while Heiniger won his No. 4 singles match by an identical 6-0, 7-5 score.

GVSU then traveled to Marion to take on Indiana Wesleyan, where the Lakers picked up a 7-2 victory.

In that match, the team of Andrew Bole and Francis Bertrand picked up an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles, while Bertrand then went on to take a 4-6, 6-1, 6-1 match at No. 1 singles to lead the Lakers.

Heckman picked up another pair of victories in this match, winning his No. 3 singles match 7-5, 6-3 after pairing with Ben Esh-Nauta for an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles.

The Lakers will be back in action on Wednesday (Mar. 19) for a 12 p.m. contest against Aquinas at the Riverview Athletic Club.
