Junior attacker Sarah Lowe netted two goals and handed out a pair of assists, but the Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team fell to No. 13 New Haven 11-6 in a neutral-site game on Saturday (Mar. 15) afternoon. The loss drops the Lakers' overall record to 2-4.
GVSU got off to a great start on what was a sunny and extremely windy afternoon in Annapolis, Md.
Lowe opened the scoring with an unassisted goal just two minutes and 56 seconds into the game. A little under three minutes later, Lowe fed sophomore midfielder Carolyn Kraus to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead.
New Haven went on to rattle off seven unasnwered goals during a scoring run that spilled over into the early goings of the second half.
Following a timeout by GVSU, junior attacker Zoe Stiemann and freshman midfielder Kira Dosenberry scored unassisted goals less than two minutes apart to make it a three-goal game.
The Chargers tacked on three more goals by the 14:57 mark to put the Lakers in a 10-4 hole, though.
Freshman attacker Carley Eutsler netted her second goal of the season off a feed from Lowe, who found the back of the net for a second time with close to three minutes left in regulation, which cut into the deficit.
New Haven's Kathryn Campbell closed out the scoring with a goal at the 2:15 mark, which sealed the Lakers' fate.
GVSU was outshot 23-15 and went just 9-of-16 on clear attempts. The Lakers also committed 20 turnovers, but did force the Chargers into 17 giveaways.
Tomorrow (Mar. 16), GVSU will face Bloomsburg at 1:30 p.m. EST to cap its two-day trip to the Old Line State.
