Lakers Drop 2014 Season-Opener at #14 Lindenwood

Saint Charles, Mo. - The Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team hung with No. 14 Lindenwood for the opening half, but were unable to keep up for the final 30 minutes of its 2014 season-opener. The Lakers were outscored 7-3 in the second half and eventually fell 16-10 on Saturday (Feb. 15) afternoon.

Junior attackers Sarah Lowe and Victoria Devine, freshman midfielder Ryan Skomial and sophomore midfielder Carolyn Kraus finished with two goals apiece. Junior midfielders Brooke Ingraham and Rachel Leibovitz rounded out the GVSU scoring with one goal each. The two also combined for three assists.

Kraus and Lowe gave the Lakers their only lead of the game at the 21:07 mark with two goals that were just one minute and 48 seconds apart. GVSU held its 4-3 edge for 58 seconds before the Lions knotted the game up at 4-4 with a free position shot.

After falling behind 7-4, Leibovitz and Lowe found the back of the goal to bring the Lakers within one with 8:01 left in the opening frame.

Lindenwood dominated the next 27 minutes of action with nine goals. The Lions also managed to hold GVSU scoreless during that span to take a commanding 16-7 lead with 11:11 remaining in regulation. Both of Skomial's goals and Ingraham's only tally came in the final 8:39 of the second half.

The Lakers were outshot 33-19, but did with the ground ball battle 13-12. GVSU was 9-of-13 on its clearing attempts as well.

The Blue and White will look to bounce back tomorrow (Feb. 16) at McKendree. The game will get underway at 2:00 p.m. EST.
