Live StatsAlready off to a 2-0 start, the Grand Valley State women's basketball team is seeking its third victory in as many games on Saturday (Nov. 29) afternoon against No. 5 Gannon. The Lakers, who handled Indianapolis 73-57 last Saturday (Nov. 22), will close out a three-game homestand and are seeking their fifth 3-0 start since the 2006-07 season.
Three-point shooting has been a major reason why GVSU has been so dominant in its first two victories. In a season-opening win against Rochester College, the Lakers drained 13 trifectas and followed that up with 10 more in their win over Indianapolis.
Leading the sharpshooting from beyond the arc is senior forward
Kat LaPrairie. The Preseason All-GLIAC Second Team performer is coming off a 20-point performance against the Greyhounds and averaging 17.0 points thus far. Wisconsin-Green Bay transfer
Brionna Barnett has contributed plenty at the offenisve end as well. The junior guard is the team's second-leading scorer with 13.0 points per game.Â
Sophomore forward
Kayla Dawson is coming off a remarkably efficient performance, bolstering GVSU's offensive firepower. Dawson poured in 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and collected five rebounds last Saturday, bringing her season averages to 12.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per contest, respectively.
Last season against nationally ranked opponents, the Lakers posted a 2-1 record. They defeated No. 12 Lewis at home, won at No. 21 Wayne State and fell to No. 18 Wayne State in a thriller at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena. Those games were decided by an average of 3.3 points.
Gannon (3-1, 2-0 PSAC), which is fresh off a loss at Ashland earlier this week, brings in one of the nation's top point guards, Amanda Berchtold. The junior is handing out 7.0 assists per contest and ranked fifth in all of Division II in assists per game in this week's statistical rankings (through games on Nov. 23). The Golden Knights also sport Nettie Blake, an elite rebounder at the Division II level. Blake entered the week tied for seventh nationally in rebounds per game (14.7).
Tip off for Saturday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST at the Fieldhouse Arena.
