Listen | Live Stats | Game Notes

The GVSU men's basketball team continues its non-conference schedule this weekend (Nov. 28-29) as the Lakers compete in the Kentucky Wesleyan Holiday Tournament in Owensboro, Ky. Grand Valley State will square off with the host school Kentucky Wesleyan on Friday afternoon before playing again on Saturday.

Friday's game between GVSU and the Panthers is scheduled for a 4:15 p.m. ET tip-off. The Lakers and Kentucky Wesleyan are the second game on Friday, as North Alabama and Truman State play in the opening game at 2:00 p.m. ET.

The winners of Friday's games will square off in Saturday's championship game at 4:15 p.m. ET. Saturday's consolation game will take place at 2:00 p.m.

Both games can be heard on WKTG-AM 1230 and WMUS 107.9 FM. Fans can also click on the 'Listen' link at the top of this page.

GVSU has earned a pair of wins over regional opponents in its last two outings, as the Lakers won at Quincy 69-67 on Nov. 16 and upended Cedarville 71-56 in the team's home opener last Saturday afternoon. The Lakers take a 2-1 record into this weekend's tournament.

Grand Valley State has held a double-digit lead in all three games this season. In fact, the Lakers never trailed in the two-point win at Quincy and fell behind Cedarville for only the first 45 seconds of last Saturday's victory. In that home win over the Yellow Jackets, GVSU owned a 46-28 rebounding advantage. For the year, the Lakes are outrebounding their opponents by an average of 8.7 boards per game.

Kentucky Wesleyan brings a 3-2 record into the tournament, having defeated Lane 81-53 on Tuesday night in Owensboro. The Panthers have faced four GLIAC schools already this season, defeating Tiffin and Wayne State to begin the year before falling to Northwood and Lake Superior State.

Last season in Allendale, KWC led the Lakers by a 38-28 halftime score before GVSU rallied for the 61-58 victory. In the win, senior Ryan Sabin knocked down 6-of-11 three-pointers and totaled a game-high 20 points, while junior Ricardo Carbajal added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Coincidentally, those two players also lead the Lakers in scoring and rebounding in the early part of this season. Both Sabin and Carbajal are scoring 13.7 points per game, while Carbajal's 7.3 rebounds per game are the best average on the team. Sabin is just behind with a 7.0 rebound per game average.

After the weekend, the Lakers travel to Ohio to begin GLIAC play. Grand Valley State will start the year at Ashland (Dec. 4) before a trip to Lake Erie (Dec. 6) to close the weekend. GVSU defeated both teams at home last season, winning 65-62 over Ashland and 84-80 versus Lake Erie.
