Canton, Ohio - Despite career-high scoring performances by junior forward Chaz Rollins and senior guard Rob Woodson, the Grand Valley State men's basketball team was dealt its second GLIAC loss at Walsh on Thursday (Jan. 9) night. The Lakers held the Cavaliers to 37.1 percent from the field, but were outscored by 11 points at the free throw line in the 75-66 loss.

GVSU went just 8-of-13 from the foul line, while Walsh converted 19-of-24 freebies. The Lakers were also out-rebounded 48-37 and yielded 16 offensive boards.

Rollins, who had never scored more than eight points in a game at GVSU, led all scorers with 26 points on 12-of-22 shooting. The Cleveland, Ohio native also grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds. It was the first time since Feb. 10, 2003 a GVSU player finished a game with 25-plus points and 15-plus rebounds since Jason Bauer scored 28 points and grabbed 17 boards in a 70-64 victory at Ferris State.

Woodson knocked down 8-of-12 attempts en route to 23 points. He dished out three assists as well. None of the other Lakers managed to score more than six points.

Walsh raced out to a 9-2 lead and doubled up GVSU, 22-11, by the 12:08 mark of the first half. The Lakers cut what eventually became a 16-point deficit to just six points by halftime, which gave them a fighting chance in the second stanza.

GVSU opened the second half with eight unanswered points to take a 37-35 lead, but the Cavaliers regained their advantage with 13:25 left in regulation and never trailed again. A free throw by Rollins at the 5:31 mark made it 58-57 before Walsh pulled away down the closing stretch.

The Lakers fell to 9-2 overall and are now 5-2 in GLIAC play. They will look to bounce back at Malone this Saturday (Jan. 11). Tip off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. EST.
