Freshman forward Kayla Dawson scored a career-high 13 points, but the Grand Valley State women's basketball team saw its six-game GLIAC winning streak come to an end on Saturday (Jan. 11) afternoon. The Lakers shot just 26.9 percent from the field in a 69-52 loss to Malone in Canton, Ohio.
Dawson knocked down 5-of-9 attempts and sunk five free throws to reach double-figures for a sixth straight game. The DePere, Wis. product also grabbed four rebounds and notched one steal.
Sophomore guard Bailey Cairnduff finished with 10 points and a game-high three steals, while junior guard Janelle McQueen chipped in eight points and five boards.
The Lakers trailed the Pioneers 29-11 with 7:17 remaining in the opening stanza, before they staged a furious rally. GVSU held Malone scoreless for the remainder of the half and went on a 16-0 run. Dawson scored eight points during that span.
Still holding a 29-27 lead following halftime, the Pioneers went on to score the game's next 11 points to put the Lakers away. A three-point play by freshman forward Piper Tucker at the 10:46 mark pulled the Lakers within six points, but they could not get any closer.
GVSU will continue its four-game road stint next Thursday (Jan. 16) at Northern Michigan. Tip off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. EST.
