ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-2 win against visiting Wheeling Jesuit in its final regular season home game on Friday evening at the Laker Lacrosse Field.
Grand Valley State improves to 10-5 on the season, while remaining in the top spot in conference play with a 7-0 record. Wheeling Jesuit falls to 5-10 and 3-4 in GLIAC play. With the win, GVSU secures the No. 1 seed in the first-ever GLIAC Tournament that will begin on April 30 at campus sites with the Lakers hosting the semifinals and finals on May 3 and 5, respectively.
Senior Allyson Fritts paced the Lakers with four goals and an assist, while sophomores Meagan Emery, Victoria Devine and Zoe Stiemann each tallied three.
Emery led GVSU with three draw controls as the Lakers held a 16-8 edge for the game. Freshman Stephanie Howell had a team-high five ground balls, while sophomore Sarah Lowe picked up four with Grand Valley State owning a 37-20 advantage.
GVSU took a 10-0 advantage by the 13:45 mark after three straight goals from Stiemann. Sophomore Brooke Ingraham also tallied her two goals during the stretch.
The Cardinals got on the board at the 1:24 mark with a pass from Jessie Tufnell to Sara Fitzsimon. Tuffnell tallied two goals in the second half, but one was called back due to a penalty.
Sophomore Audrey Kobe earned the win with one save and split time with junior Lindsay McCarty who picked up two stops. Hannah Lazuka picked up 14 saves in the loss.
Grand Valley State closes out its regular season schedule at Urbana on Sunday. First draw is scheduled for 2 p.m.
