ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team split a pair of matches in regional play with a 7-2 win against Missouri-St. Louis, before falling, 7-2 to No. 29 Drury on Sunday afternoon.
Grand Valley moves to 22-6 on the season and is ranked 42nd in the nation, while owning the fourth-spot in the ITA Midwest Region Poll.
Against Drury, the doubles pair of Niki Shipman and Morgan Carney grabbed an 8-6 victory in the No. 3 spot. Drury stormed through singles play leaving the Lakers with only one victory, a three-set win (6-2, 3-6, 10-6) from Claire Cooper.
In the later match, GVSU ran away with the win after taking a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Leah Dancz and Allison Fecko picked up an 8-6 victory in the No. 2 slot, while Shipman and Carney were also victorious winning, 8-5, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Shipman grabbed a 2-6, 6-3, 8-6, win in the No. 1 position, while partner Carney, also won in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 10-5. Lexi Rice swept her competition, 6-0, 6-0, in the No. 3 spot and Cooper picked up another win, 6-1, 6-3, in No. 5 singles. Kali Phillips closed out the victory for GVSU with a 6-2, 6-1, win in the No. 6 position.
The Lakers close out their regular spring season against Hope on Tuesday, April 16 at 4 p.m. GVSU will then await a possible berth into the NCAA Championship. Selections will be announced on April 23 at 8 p.m.
