GRANDVILLE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's tennis team picked up a 6-3 victory against visiting Ohio Dominican on Friday afternoon at the Ramblewood Tennis Club.a
The Lakers improve to 2-0 in the early part of conference play and a 4-1 record overall. Ohio Dominican is still looking for its first win with an 0-5 record and a 0-2 mark in league action.
GVSU owned a 2-0 lead after doubles play, picking up victories in the No. 1 and No. 2 positions. Francis Bertrand and Bryan Hodges partnered again to win 8-2 in the first spot, while Andrew Darrell and Quinn Sylow picked up an 8-6 win in the No. 2 spot.
Moving into singles action, Ohio Dominican was able to pick up wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 spots, but GVSU picked up the rest of the wins to take the match.
Darrell defeated Tito Bonadonna, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in the second position, while Hodges also grabbed a win in his singles match defeating Tyler Johnston, 6-1, 7-5, in the No. 3 spot. Freshmen Andrew Bole and Michael Kaye each took their matches as well. Bole had two hard-fought sets, picking up a 7-5, 7-6 (7), victory in No. 5 singles. Kaye rounded out the singles wins with a three-set victory, 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the No. 6 position.
The Lakers continue GLIAC action against Findlay on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Rockford at the MVP Sportsplex.
