Eleven different members of the Grand Valley State women's basketball team made at least one field goal in a 69-52 victory over Tiffin on Sunday (Dec. 15) afternoon. The Lakers shot a season-high 54.5 percent from the field and limited the Dragons to just 15 points in the first half to put this one away early.
GVSU got off to a slow start and trailed Tiffin, 6-5, at the 17:49 mark. Just 41 seconds later, an offensive rebound by sophomore guard Bailey Cairnduff led to a layup by senior guard Dani Crandall and put the Lakers in front for good.
Crandall ignited a 29-4 run over the course of 11 minutes and 59 seconds. During that stretch, GVSU's defense held the Dragons without a basket until the 7:14 mark.
Sophomore guard Eryn Maday finished off a layup in the paint with only 27 seconds left in the opening frame to give the Lakers a 43-14 lead, their largest of the game, at the time. A Tiffin free throw cut GVSU's advantage to 28 points just moments before halftime.
A jumper by junior forward Kat LaPrairie on its opening possession of the second half put the Lakers out in front, 45-15. The Dragons battled back, but never got the deficit below 14 points.
Cairnduff finished with a game-high 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Maday and freshman forward Kayla Dawson chipped in eight points apiece. Sophomore center Jill Steinmetz grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Lakers converted 45.9 percent of their attempts (28-61) and out-rebounded the Dragons, 49-38. GVSU also shot 42.9 percent (9-21) from beyond the arc.
Next up for the Lakers, who improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in GLIAC play, is a trip to Ohio Dominican on Tuesday (Dec. 17). Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. EST.
