Allendale, Mich. -
On a night when the Grand Valley State women's soccer team received numerous awards, it dominated from start to finish. The No. 1 Lakers scored a pair of goals in the eighth minute, which sparked a 7-0 rout of Ferris State on Friday (Nov. 8) night.
Junior forward Jenny Shaba, who received the GLIAC "Offensive Player of the Year" award prior to the semifinal match, tallied two goals and four assists to lead GVSU.
Freshman midfielder Marti Corby broke the match open in the eighth minute by beating keeper Rachel McCollum in the top left corner. Less than a minute later, Corby tacked on another goal on a long, curving shot from the middle of the box, which crossed the line just inside the right post. Shaba assisted on both goals.
Junior defender Juane Odendaal scored for the first time this season in the 15th minute off a pass from Shaba. Odendaal became the 17th Laker to find the back of the net this year.
Senior midfielder Shelby Humphries extended GVSU's lead in the 42nd minute and Shaba put any hope of a Bulldogs' comeback away for good with a tally in the 48th minute.
Senior midfielder Charlie Socia headed a cross-pass from Shaba past McCollum to make it 6-0 at the 58:49 mark. Shaba scored her second goal of the night just seven minutes later on a cross-pass from sophomore forward Katie Bounds.
The Lakers improved to 18-0-1 on the year and matched the longest unbeaten streak in NCAA Division II history with their victory. GVSU has not lost in 61 consecutive home matches.
Next up for the Lakers is the GLIAC Tournament title game, which will take place Sunday (Nov. 10) at 1:00 p.m. EST. GVSU will host Michigan Tech as it eyes a seventh straight conference tournament championship.
