The No. 5-ranked Grand Valley State men's swimming and diving team dominated Michigan State Friday (Nov. 8) night in East Lansing, claiming a 166-134 victory. GVSU won 12-of-14 swimming events en route to the victory. The MSU women defeated the Lakers by a score of 162-138. GVSU will next be in action Nov. 22 and 23 at the Ball State Doug Coers Invitational.
For the men, sophomore Gianni Ferrero won three individual events (200 free-1:38.96, 500 free-4:36.25, 200 IM-1:50.16) and swam the opening leg of the first-place finishing 200 medley relay team. Senior Aaron Marken won the 100 breast (56.30), 200 breast (2:05.76) and was a part of the medley relay team that touched first, while junior Sven Kardol touched first in the 100 (51.25) and 200 back (1:49.87). Senior Michael Griffith finished first in the 50 free (20.83) and swam the medley and free relay teams that touched first. Patrick Sheppell won the 1000 free (9:35.30) and junior Milan Medo won the 100 free (45.97). GVSU's 200 medley relay team (Ferrero, Marken, Griffith, Aakesson) touched first (1:30.73), while 200 free relay team (Medo, Griffith, Danny Abbott, Aakesson) also touched first (1:22.27). Freshman Nick Burciaga finished third on the 1-meter (284.70) and 3-meter (221.91). His 1-meter score was just .3 from an NCAA A cut.
The Laker women were led by freshman Meghan Falconer and Caitlyn Madsen, both double winners. Falconer touched first in the 100 (58.09) and 200 back (2:05.07), while Madsen finished first in the 200 fly (2:05.17) and the 200 IM (2:09.02). Senior Danielle Vallieir won the 100 breast (1:04.65) and junior Sarah Roeser touched first in the 50 free (23.91). In addition, the 200 medley relay team (Olivia Schultz, Vallier, Madsen, Roeser) finished first in a time of 1:45.36.
