ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to perennial GLIAC powerhouse Northwood at the GVSU Tennis Courts on Wednesday (Oct. 9) afternoon, the final home match on the slate for the team. The loss snapped a six-match winning streak in dual matches for the Lakers.
GVSU falls to 8-2 overall on the year with a 7-2 record in the conference, while Northwood stays unbeaten at 11-0 overall and in the GLIAC.
The four points surrendered by the Timberwolves are the most any team has won against Northwood so far this season.
In doubles play, the team of Leah Dancz and Kali Phillips picked up the only GVSU victory, winning their match, 8-3, and staying undefeated on the year at 10-0 in dual matches.
In singles, the Lakers dominated the bottom half of play, picking up wins at #4, #5 and #6 singles. Niki Shipman won her #4 singles match (6-1, 6-2) and extends her dual match record to 9-0 on the season. At #5 singles, Carola Orna, fresh off her tournament victory, won 6-3, 6-4 and pushes her record to 7-1 on the season in dual matches. Kelly Trapp also remained undefeated on the year in dual matches with her 7-5, 6-2 victory at #6 singles. She is now 8-0 in dual match play and 14-1 overall on the season.
While the home portion of the schedule is now done for the Lakers, there are still four matches to play in the conference schedule. Next, GVSU will hit the road for a 3 p.m. tilt at Tiffin on Friday (Oct. 11).
