MIDLAND, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team dropped a 5-1 decision to Northwood at the 2013 GLIAC Women's Tennis Championship on Saturday (Oct. 26) afternoon. The Lakers will now face Tiffin in the third-place match on Sunday (Oct. 27) at 8:30 a.m. at the Midland Tennis Center.
The Lakers are now 12-4 on the season and are the #4 seed in the tournament. Northwood moves to 16-0 overall and is the #1 seed.
GVSU was the only team during the regular season to win four points against Northwood in a single match, and the Lakers were at it again, giving the Timberwolves all they could handle in the doubles matches.
At #1 doubles, the Lakers picked up their lone victory, as the team if Lexi Rice/Carola Orna took an 8-6 decision. At #2 doubles, the team of Kali Phillips/Lexi Dancz went to extras, but fell, 9-7. The team of Kelly Trapp/Kristina Lucas fell at #3 doubles, 8-4.
In singles, Northwood won three decisions, at #1, #3 and #4 singles. The remaining three matches went unfinished as the Timberwolves had the match wrapped up, 5-1.
The Lakers and Dragons will battle in a third-place match at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. Northwood will face Wayne State in the championship match.
