MIDLAND, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team is moving on in the 2013 GLIAC Women's Tennis Tournament thanks to a 5-1 victory over Walsh on Friday (Oct. 25) evening at the Midland Tennis Center.
The Lakers, now 12-3 on the season, were the #4 seed in the tournament, while Walsh is the #5 seed. The Cavaliers are now 12-5 overall, with two of those losses coming to GVSU.
GVSU will now take on top-seeded Northwood at 3:45 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 26). In the regular season, the Lakers were the only team to take four points from Northwood on the year, falling in a close 5-4 contest.
The Lakers held a 2-1 edge following doubles, as the #2 doubles team of Kali Phillips/Leah Dancz won their match 8-2, and the #3 team of Kelly Trapp/Kristina Lucas won their match, 8-1.
In singles, GVSU picked up the points in the three finished matches to end the contest prematurely. In #1 singles, Lexi Rice picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory, while #3 singles was won by Niki Shipman, 6-2, 6-1. Carola Orna, at #5 singles, needed three sets, but came away with a 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 victory to close out the match. The fifth point gave the Lakers the victory, and the remaining three singles matches went unfinished.
Northwood won their first-round match over Ferris State, 5-0. In the other semifinal, it will be Wayne State (5-0 over Ashland) against Tiffin (5-1 over Hillsdale).
