Allendale, Mich. -
For the fourth consecutive match, Grand Valley State topped its opponent by a 3-0 tally, as the Lakers notched perfect weekend at the Riverfront Hotel Grand Rapids Classic on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 8). GVSU knocked off Seton Hill by scores of 25-16, 25-20, and 25-20 to move to 7-1 on the season.
In winning for the seventh time in eight matches this season, the Lakers hit .340 offensively and nearly doubled Seton Hill in kills (50-27). SHU falls to 4-4 on the year. Six Grand Valley State players tallied at least six kills, led by the match-high 13 putaways from freshman Betsy Ronda, who tallied her fourth double-double of the season. Ronda added 14 digs to her 13 kills.
GVSU came out of the gates firing early, leading 11-2 on three kills apiece from Ronda and sophomore Abby Aiken. The Lakers posted a .395 hitting percentage and 18 kills in the opening stanza, but it was a solo block from senior Eno Umoh that ended the set at 25-16.
In set two, junior Sam Phillips combined with Umoh for a block, then recorded a pair of kills of her own on back-to-back points to put Grand Valley State ahead 14-5. Sophomore Christina Canepa served up two aces during the early run. Seton Hill pulled within 23-20, but late in the set Ronda put down three kills, including the final point of the set. GVSU moved on with a 25-20 win.
Things didn't start so well in the third set, as Seton Hill raced out to an 11-4 cushion. The Lakers started chipping away at the deficit just like they had done in their earlier match on Saturday when GVSU rallied from down 20-11 to win 27-25 against Stonehill. Grand Valley State, trailing 18-16, scored five straight points on the serving of junior Lyndsey Holt to lead 21-18. A kill from Umoh and two more from Ronda gave GVSU another 25-20 victory, as Ronda's kill again ended the set and match.
Aiken supplied eight kills, while junior Abby Ebels connected for eight kills in eight attempts and a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage. Last season, she tied an NCAA Division II record with 13 kills in 13 attempts, the highest perfect hitting percentage in history.
Junior Megan Schroeder was very good, as well, adding seven kills in 13 swings (without an error) for a .538 percentage. Umoh put away seven kills and hit .545, while blocking five more shots and eclipsing the 400-total block mark in her career. Setters Clair Ruhenkamp (24 assists) and Stephanie Camper (21) dished the ball well on Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers have a great test ahead of them in their next match. GVSU heads to Hillsdale on Sept. 14 for a 7:00 p.m. showdown with the Chargers, who advanced to the NCAA Final Four last season.
