UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - Behind strong singles play, the Grand Valley State women's tennis team earned a 7-2 victory at Saginaw Valley State on Friday afternoon at the SVSU Tennis Complex. The Lakers travel to Lake Superior State to continue GLIAC play on Saturday at 10 a.m.
GVSU improves to 4-1 on the season and in conference action, while SVSU drops to 5-4 on the year and the same in the GLIAC.
The Lakers let a point slip by in doubles competition, dropping the No. 1 doubles game, 9-7. The GVSU duo of freshman Claire Cooper and sophomore Morgan Patterson picked up a point for the Lakers in the No. 3 spot with an 8-6 win over Charlotte Wong and Katie Piokowski.
Grand Valley State then took every singles point for the win. In the No. 1 spot, junior Niki Shipman defeated Yunjia Shangguan, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Leah Dancz also picked up a win, 6-4, 6-1, in the No. 2 singles spot, while junior Lexi Rice defeated Kelli Close, 6-2, 6-3 in the third match.
Cooper earned another win against Wong, winning 6-4, 6-0, in the No. 4 spot, while doubles partner Patterson won 7-5, 6-2 over Erin Doud. Wrapping up singles competition, Kali Phillips defeated Theresa Frederick, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 6 slot.
