ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team completed its weekend with a 9-0 victory over Lake Erie College on a sunny, Sunday afternoon.
The Lakers improves to 3-0 on the season and in GLIAC competition, while the Storm drop to 0-5 on the year.
GVSU got out in front early with victories in doubles competition. Freshman Claire Cooper (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore Morgan Patterson (Haslett, Mich.) earned an 8-5 win in a hard-fought match in the No. 1 spot. Newcomer Rebecca Phyle (St. Clair) and sophomore Kristina Lucas (Clarkston, Mich.) won 8-2 in the No. 2 spot. The third match was not play due to Lake Erie having five players on its roster.
In singles play, Cooper again came away with a win, 6-1, 7-6 (2) in the No. 1 spot. Junior Niki Shipman (Saline, Mich.) earned a shutout, 6-0, 6-0, win over Erika Ginn in the No. 2 spot. Playing No. 3 singles, sophomore Kali Phillips (Harbor Springs) defeated Brittany Kelly, 6-1, 6-0.
Senior Allison Fecko (Grand Rapids, Mich.) shut down her opponent, 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot, while sophomore Kelly Trapp (Ada, Mich.) earned a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 5 singles.
Grand Valley State is back in action on Friday, Sept. 21 at Jenison High School for the ITA Regional Tournament. Play begins at 8 a.m.
