Women's Tennis Picks Up 9-0 Win over Walsh

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State women's tennis team had no trouble with Walsh, a new member of the GLIAC, as the Lakers shutout the Pioneers, 9-0, on Saturday morning at the GVSU Tennis Courts.

The Lakers move to 2-0 in the early part of the season and in GLIAC play as well. Walsh falls to 0-5 on the year and in conference matches.

Doubles competition was a tighter than a match before, but GVSU still was able to pick up three straight wins. Senior Katelynn Schaffer (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) and junior Lexi Rice (Augusta, Mich.) paired up in the No.1 spot to earn an 8-4 victory. In No. 2 doubles, junior Anne Marie Morin (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and classmate Niki Shipman (Saline, Mich.) won 8-4 as well. In the final doubles spot, freshman Claire Cooper (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore Morgan Patterson (Haslett, Mich.) came away with an 8-2 victory.

In singles action, Shipman returned to the No. 1 position that she played in a season ago, picking up a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Shellie Webster. Morin picked up a 6-0, 7-5 win in the No. 2 spot as well. Playing in the third singles position, Morgan Carney (Mobile, Ala.) defeated Alisha Angle, 6-0, 6-1.

Schaffer returned to singles after a redshirt season for a 6-4, 6-4 victory in the No. 4 position. Rounding out the singles victories, Patterson won 6-0, 6-1, while Rebecca Phyle (St. Clair, Mich.) earned her first win as a Laker, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot.

GVSU continues GLIAC play on Sunday at 10 a.m. against Lake Erie at the GVSU Tennis Courts.
