PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Grand Valley State women's lacrosse team's second-half rally fell just short at Lake Erie, 13-12, on Friday afternoon at Britt Stadium.
GVSU drops to 5-6 on the season, while Lake Erie impoves to 6-4. The Lakers stay on the road to face Tiffin on its home field on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Freshman Victoria Devine (Centereach, N.Y.) led the Lakers scoring all four of her goals in the last two minutes of the game. She also had two assists on the day. Classmate Korinne Culley (Hilliard, Ohio) had three goals, while redshirt freshman Meagan Emery (Belmont, Mich.) added two goals and two assists.
The Storm got on the board first on Julia Kudla's goal at 28:43, but the Lakers answered back shortly after with a goal from redshirt freshman Ali Dixon (Farmington Hills, Mich.) to tie the game.
Neither team could find any offensive rhythm as they traded scores aback and forth until knotting the score at 6-6 with four minutes left in the half.
Lake Erie's Meredith Howe ripped home a goal with three seconds left in the first to give the Storm a 7-6 lead heading in the break.
The Storm scored two straight out of the break before GVSU answered with two goals of its own from freshman Brooke Ingraham (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Culley.
With the score in the Storm's favor, 9-8, Lake Erie scored four straight goals to go up 13-8 with 2:22 left in the game.
Devine tallied four straight goals, including two free-position shots, in the final two minutes, but it was not enough as Lake Erie pulled out the win.
For the game, Lake Erie held a 31-27 edge in shots, while also owning an 19-11 margin for ground balls. GVSU did control the off the draw, holding an 18-10 advantage in draw controls, but were hampered by 21 turnovers.
Freshman Audrey Kobe (New Hudson, Mich.) had 11 saves in the loss, while her counterpart Emily Rock notched eight for the Storm.
Ashriel West paced Lake Erie with four goals, while Kudla had three goals and three assists in the victory.
