HICKORY, N.C. - The Grand Valley State women's lacrosse strong second-half performance was not enough as the Lakers dropped its game, 15-9, to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday night at Moretz Stadium.
GVSU now stands at 1-2 and looks to even its record on Friday, March 9 at Queens (N.C.) when it plays the Royals at 2 p.m. to close out its spring break trip.
Freshmen Brooke Ingraham (Rochester Hills, Mich.) and Rachel Leibovitz (Naperville, Ill.) and junior Allyson Fritts (Howell, Mich.) each tallied two goals a piece. Freshman Sarah Lowe (Okemos, Mich.) had a goal and two assists on the day.
Lenoir-Rhyne jumped out to an early 5-0 lead nine minutes into the game before Meagan Emery (Belmont, Mich.) tallied a goal to end the run with 20:14 remaining in the half.
The Lakers were held to just one goal for the remainder of the stanza, while the Bears were able to get on the board four more times for a 9-2 score heading into halftime.
Grand Valley State outscored the Bears, 7-6, in the second half, but it was not enough to overcome the first-half goal deficit. The Lakers were able to score four straight goals to cut the Bears' lead to just five (13-8) with 4:19 remaining in the game thanks to back-to-back goals from Ingraham and tallies from Lowe and Fritts.
Freshman keeper Audrey Kobe (New Hudson, Mich.) 12 saves in the loss, while Lenoir-Rhyne had keepers split time in the net with Allison Senft earning the win with 10 saves.
For the game, Lenoir-Rhyne held a 33-23 edge in shots and a 15-12 margin in draw controls. The Lakers were hampered by 23 turnovers, but the Bears did not have much better ball control as they had 22.
