ALLENDALE, Mich. - Freshman attack Rachel Leibovitz (Naperville, Ill.) led the Lakers with six goals as Grand Valley State women's lacrosse picked up a 16-8 win against Tiffin on Saturday afternoon at the Laker Lacrosse and Track Stadium.
GVSU improves to 3-4 on the season and looks to even its record at .500 against Olivet on Sunday at 2 p.m. at home. Tiffin falls to 1-6 on the year.
The Lakers were able to jump out to a six-goal lead with 18 minutes left to play in the first half. Freshman Victoria Devine (Centereach, N.Y.) tallied her first of three goals at 29:03, while Leibovitz tallied her first just three minutes later.
Freshman Jordan Luberto (Okemos, Mich.) notched back-to-back goals including a successful free-position shot. Classmate Korinne Culley (Hilliard, Ohio), who also had three goals on the day, netted her first of the game with 18:29 to play in the first.
Back-to-back goals from Kaitlin Clarke ended the Lakers' run, but GVSU found a way to stay out in front. Freshman Brooke Ingraham (Rochester Hills, Mich.) conncted with Culley for a 7-2 score.
The Lakers held the Dragons to just two more goals in the half, while tallying three more of their own fora 10-4 halftime score. GVSU outshot Tiffin 18-11 in the first half, while also converting three free-position shots to the Dragons' one.
Out of the half, two goals from Leibovitz sandwiched a goal from redshirt freshman Ali Dixon (Farmington Hills, Mich.) giving the Lakers a 13-4 advantage.
Grand Valley State took a 10-goal lead with 8:39 left on the clock and maintained its distance to win its second straight game.
For the game, GVSU held an 38-22 edge in shots and 17-8 margin in draw controls. The Lakers were still hurt by turnovers, giving up the ball 16 times to Tiffin's 15. Grand Valley State went 4-for-9 on free-position shots.
Freshman Audrey Kobey picked up eight saves in her third win of the seasons, while Tiffin keeper Jessica Bombard had 11 in the loss.
Clarke and Alexis MacMillan each tallied two goals for the Dragons while four others added to the score.
