GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The No. 25 Grand Valley State women’s tennis team split its matches on Sunday as it defeated Butler, 4-3, in Indianapolis before falling to No. 16 DePauw, 6-3, at the DePauw Indoor Tennis and Track Center.

In the morning match against Division I opponent Butler, the Lakers were able to come back from dropping the doubles point to rally during singles play. Freshman Leah Dancz (Hudsonville, Mich.) and junior Allison Fecko (Grand Rapids, Mich.) did win their No. 2 doubles match, 8-3.

Sophomore Lexi Rice (Augusta, Mich.) grabbed a 6-4, 6-0 victory at No. 3 singles, while classmate Anne Marie Morin (Rochester Hills, Mich.) also picked up a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 4 slot.

Grand Valley State closed out the match with wins at No. 5 singles from Fecko and No. 6 from freshman Morgan Patterson (Haslett, Mich.) Fecko defeated Laura Shull, 6-2, 7-5, while Patterson won 6-1, 6-1.

Later in the day, the Lakers traveled to Greencastle, Ind. to face off with No. 16 DePauw. Dancz and Feck again picked up an 8-1 win at the No. 2 doubles spot, but DePauw took the other two points for the victory.

In singles action, sophomore Niki Shipman was able to defeat her counterpart, Kelly Gebert, in a hard fought, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (4) victory. Rice also got a point for the Lakers, defeating Claire Marshall, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

GVSU now takes a short break before heading to Orlando, Fla. for matches over the school’s spring break. The Lakers play College of New Jersey in a scrimmage on March 3, before taking on Creighton and Minnesota State Mankato on March 5 at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
