INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 25 Grand Valley State women’s tennis team dropped a close, 5-4, contest against Drury on Saturday afternoon in a Midwest Regional match.
Drury took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, having to default at the No. 3 positions. At No. 1 seniors Tara Hayes (Shelby Township, Mich.) and Alyssa Lucas (Clarkston, Mich.) were just edged out, 9-8, 10-8, by Beatriz Juan and Stefanie Monsch.
Drury was forced to default at the No. 6 singles position tying to match at 2-2 automatically. Hayes picked up a 6-4, 6-2, win at No. 2 singles, while Anne Marie Morin (Rochester Hills, Mich.) also won, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 5 slot.
It came down to the wire at No. 4 singles as sophomore Lexi Rice (Augusta, Mich.) fell to Jelena Schaeftimeier, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 and Drury was able to take the match.
The Lakers stay on the road to face Butler on Sunday at 8 a.m. before playing at DePauw later at 4:30 p.m.
