ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Grand Valley State men's basketball team used a 55-point second half effort to overwhelm Kuyper College at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on Monday (Nov. 19) night in an 87-53 victory for the Lakers.
GVSU moves to 2-1 on the year with the victory, while Kuyper falls to 3-5.
The Lakers started off sluggish, allowing Kuyper to take an early 10-6 lead four minutes in to the game, but a 9-1 run over the next three minutes allowed GVSU to take a 15-11 lead.
Two straight trifectas by Kuyper's Kevin Singh put the Cougars back in front, 17-15 with 10:13 to play in the first half, but again the Lakers went on the offensive, taking a 20-17 lead following a jumper from sophomore Ryan Majerle (Rockford, Mich.). Yet again, Kuyper was able to go on a run, scoring the next seven points to lead 24-20 with only six minutes to play in the opening stanza.
GVSU was able to get a foothold following that Cougar run, ending the half on a 12-6 run to go in to the locker room up 32-30.
The Lakers got 10 first-half points from Majerle and seven from sophomore Kristers Zeidaks (Riga, Latvia), but GVSU struggled from the free-throw line, hitting only 22.2-percent (2-for-9) of their attempts. Kuyper hung on behind the strength of six first-half three-pointers, six second-chance points and 10 points off turnovers.
GVSU took control coming out of the locker room, scoring nine of the first 11 points to move ahead 41-32.
Singh kept the game close, scoring five straight Cougar points to keep Kuyper within eight at 48-40, but a 20-4 run by the Lakers effectively put the game away. The run was capped by another thunderous alley-oop by Zeidaks from junior Rob Woodson (Inkster, Mich.) for the second straight home game, as GVSU led 68-44 with only 5:42 to play in the game.
The Lakers would extend the run from there, going on a 19-9 run to end the game as GVSU cruised to an 87-53 victory.
Woodson led the Lakers in scoring with 15 points, going 7-for-7 from the field. 13 of his 15 points came in the second half, as well as all five of his rebounds. Woodson also dished out four assists as he filled up the stat sheet for GVSU.
Majerle and Zeidaks each poured in 13 points, with Zeidaks pulling down four rebounds and Majerle three. Sophomore Darius Norman (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and redshirt freshman Ricardo Carbajal (Munster, Ind.) each had six points and five rebounds, while Carbajal tied for the team-high with five assists. Sophomore Ryan Sabin (Byron Center, Mich.) and freshman Darren Kapustka (Grand Rapids, Mich.) each had nine points on 4-of-5 shooting to go with three assists.
As a team, the Lakers' second-half consisted of going 24-for-35 (68.6-percent) from the field, as GVSU finished the game by shooting 59.7-percent from the field (37-for-62) compared to just 29.2-percent (19-for-65) for Kuyper.
GVSU held a massive edge in points in the point and bench points, outscoring the Cougars 44-10 inside the painted area and 46-15 off the bench.
The Lakers, now 2-1 on the year, will host Cedarville on Saturday (Nov. 24) for the final non-conference game of the regular season. Tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
