FINDLAY, Ohio - The Grand Valley State women's soccer team could not overcome three second-half goals at Findlay as the Lakers fell, 3-2, on Friday afternoon at DeHaven Field.
The loss snaps a 10-game shut out streak and is the Lakers' first conference loss since Sept. 19, 2010 when they fell at Northern Michigan, 1-0, in overtime. GVSU is now 10-1-2 on the year and 6-1-1 in GLIAC action. Findlay improves to 4-6-1 and 4-3-1 in the conference.
Grand Valley State struck first with a goal from senior Kayla Addison (Southfield, Mich.) at the 20:39 mark. Classmate Erin Hilbert (Ada, Mich.) found Addison who beat the keeper outside the six-yard box for the 1-0 lead.
The rest of the half was evenly match with GVSU holding a slight 6-5 edge in shots at the break. Findlay notched three on target, forcing senior keeper Chelsea Parise (Sterling Heights, Mich.) to grab three saves.
Findlay came out of the half quickly, with Emily Beddoes striking less than a minute into the second stanza to even the score. The Oilers tacked on its next goal at the 54:15 mark thanks to Ann Eichman for a 2-1 lead.
Late in the second half, Beddoes was able to take advantage of a GVSU miscue and sent what would be the game-winning goal into the back of net at the 82:29 mark.
Senior Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) closed the gap for the Lakers in the 86th minute off a break away to make it a 3-2 game, but the Lakers could not muster any other offense to send the match into overtime.
GVSU owned a 15-8 edge in total shots, while Findlay owned a 4-2 advantage on corner kicks. Addison led the Lakers with six shots, while Brown had five.
The Lakers close out its five-game road swing at Tiffin on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Paradiso Fields.
