ALLENDALE, Mich. – The GVSU women’s tennis team picked up its fifth straight win including fourth of the weekend, defeating Hillsdale, 7-2, on Sunday morning at the Ramblewood Tennis Club.
The Lakers improve to 6-1 on the season and 5-1 in the GLIAC, while the Chargers drop to 2-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play.
Grand Valley State dropped one doubles match, but picked up wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. The sister duo of senior Alyssa Lucas (Clarkston, Mich.) and freshman Kristina Lucas (Clarkston, Mich.) shut out Morgan Linden and Elena Sakelaris in the No. 2 doubles spot.
Shutouts were the trend in the singles competition as the No. 3 through 6 spots did not give up a single set. Sophomore Anne Marie Morin (Rochester Hills, Mich.) downed Linden, 6-0, 6-0 and Kristina Lucas defeated Abby Sjoersdma in the same fashion at No. 4.
Freshmen Kali Phillips (Harbor Springs, Mich.) and Morgan Patterson (Haslett, Mich.) also got some conference experience going 6-0, 6-0 in their No. 5 and No. 6 matches, respectively. Patterson’s win was the first career-GLIAC win.
The Lakers now host Northwood on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. at the GVSU Tennis Courts.
