Sept. 16, 2011

Box Score

ALLENDALE, Mich.  -  The No. 19 Grand Valley State women's soccer team downed visiting Michigan Tech, 4-0, in the first-ever game under the lights at the GVSU Soccer Field on Friday night. GVSU hosts No. 13 Northern Michigan on Sunday at noon.

The win moves the Lakers to 2-0-1 on the season and more importantly 2-0-0 in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech falls to 2-2-1 and 0-2-1 in conference action.

"We scored four goals tonight compared to one in our other three games, which is a good thing," said head coach Dave DiIanni. "This week the emphasis was on ball movement and changing the point of attack and we had some great chances.  I thought Michigan Tech played hard, but we definitely have to work on not letting chances get by us."

For the first time in 2011, GVSU got on the board in the first half of the game thanks to a quick shot from junior Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wisc.).  Botts fired in her first goal of the season in the 31st minute just outside the six-yard line into the upper left corner for what would be the game-winning goal.

The Lakers notched their second goal thanks to freshman Juane Odendaal (London, Ontario) who received a pass from Lindsey Marlow (Livonia, Mich.), giving GVSU a 2-0 lead at 34:54.  From the right side, Marlow found Odendaal in the perfect position in front of the net and she sent it into the upper left corner.

The Huskies best chance came in the 36th minute when Katie Boardman fired a hard shot towards the lower right post, but junior keeper Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) made a diving save to keep the shutout intact.

GVSU held Michigan Tech to just five shots in the first half while taking 16 of its own, but was limited to just one corner kick.

Botts was not done for the night as she notched her second goal of the game at 65:56, making a move around Michigan Tech keeper MaryBeth Spoehr for the 3-0 advantage.  Junior Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) also tallied her first goal of the season at 88:59, giving the Lakers' the 4-0 victory.

Despite catching GVSU offside 10 times, the Lakers took a total of 27 shots including 19 on target, while the Huskies were limited to eight.  Spoehr made 14 saves on the night, while Parise tallied four.
