Final Stats
SAGINAW, Mich. – The No. 15 Grand Valley State women’s tennis team picked up a 7-2 win at Saginaw Valley on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. The Lakers next competition begins on Friday, Sept. 16 at the ITA Regionals.
The win moves the Lakers record to 3-1 on the season and in the GLIAC while SVSU drops to 0-3 on the year.
Saginaw Valley picked up one point in the doubles competition, winning the No. 1 spot in a hard fought match, 9-7. GVSU easily got the two other points in doubles winning at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, 8-0 and 8-1, respectively.
Just like in doubles, the Cardinals were able to take one point at No. 1 singles as Yunjiao Shangguan defeated sophomore Niki Shipman (Saline, Mich.), 6-1, 6-3. Sophomore Lexi Rice (Augusta, Mich.) continued her successful play, winning at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1. Senior Tara Hayes (Shelby Township, Mich.) defeated Meghan Woody in the No. 2 competition, 6-0, 6-0, while freshman Kali Phillips (Harbor Springs, Mich.) also shutout Theresa Frederick, 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 6 slot to tally a point for the Lakers as well.
