No. 3 Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC twinbill Wednesday afternoon at Northwood. GVSU claimed a 6-3 comeback win in game one, followed by an 11-0 shutout win in game two. GVSU is now 27-3 overall and 16-1 in GLIAC action, while Northwood falls to 12-14 overall and 7-9 in GLIAC play. The Lakers are schedule to play a four game series at Tiffin Saturday (April 16) and Sunday (April 17).
Junior 2B Garrett Yatch opened the game getting hit by a pitch and went to third on a single by CF Cody Grice. Yatch advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a sac fly by LF Steve Anderson. Northwood tied the game in the bottom of the second with a run on two hits and a Laker error. The Timberwolves took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on three hits off starter Joe Jablonski. Sophomore Brad Zambron came in and got the final two outs with two runners on to keep the Lakers in contention.
In the top of the sixth Grice opened with the inning with a groundout, followed by a double to left from Anderson. 1B Giancarlo Brugnoni came through with a 2-run homer to center to give the Lakers a 3-2 lead. SS Andrew Trepel walked and moved to third on a two-out single to right from Dan Ponegalek. Ponegalek stole second and DH Cory Phillips followed with a 2-run single to right to up the Laker lead to 5-2. Brugnoni added an RBI single in the top of the seventh that scored Anderson to give GVSU the 6-3 win.
Zambron picked up the win in relief, yielding three hits and one run in 2.2 innings. Jablonski gave up two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts. Brugnoni was 3-for-3 with three RBI, while Anderson was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. Phillips drove in two runs in a 1-for-3 outing.
GVSU scored early and often in game two, claiming an 11-0 win. The Lakers scored in six of seven innings, including three in the first, two in the second, one in the third and three more in the fourth. GVSU added single runs in the fifth and seventh. The Lakers' three runs in the top of the first came with no hits. Yatch walked and moved to third on two wild pitches. Paul Young walked and Grice reached on a fielder's choice. Anderson was hit by a pitch to score Yatch and Brugnoni scored Young with a sac fly. Grice later scored on a wild pitch to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Grice and Anderson each drove in runs in the second with sac fly's. C Jared Cowan gave the Lakers a 6-0 lead with a single to center to push Yatch across home plate. GVSU broke the game open with three runs on four hits in the fourth. Young doubled home Yatch and Grice scored Young with a single to center. Brugnoni drove in Grice with a double.
The top three batters in GVSU's lineup scored nine runs, highlighted by four from Yatch and three from Young. Yatch and Young each collected a pair of hits, while Grice, Anderson and Brugnoni each drove in a pair of runs. Junior RHP Kyle Schepel picked up his sixth win of the year, yielding two hits in 5.0 innigns of work. Schepel struck out four and walked two. Cory Rademacher pitched the final two innings, yielding just one hit.
