Fourth-ranked Grand Valley State swept a GLIAC doubleheader at Lake Erie College Sunday (March 27), winning game one 7-5 and game two 12-1. GVSU, which improves to 15-2 overall and 4-0 in GLIAC action, swept all four games at Lake Erie College over the weekend and will continue its trip through Ohio with a four-game GLIAC series at Ashland next Saturday (April 2) and Sunday (April 3).
The Lakers claimed a tough 7-5 victory in game one, scoring seven runs on nine hits. The top four batters in GVSU's lineup went 8-for-15, scored six runs and drove in three. Junior Ryan Garman improved to 2-1 on the year with the win. Garman yielded four runs, two of which were earned, on eight hits in 5.2 innings with two strikeouts and two walks.
Junior 2B Garrett Yatch opened with a walk and moved to second on passed ball. Yatch moved to third on a throw to first and scored when the first baseman attempted to get Yatch at third. The Storm tied the game in the bottom of the first on two hits and a Laker error. GVSU took the lead in the top of the third with two runs on two hits. Yatch singled with one out and CF Cody Grice walked with two outs. Both runners moved up a base on an errant throw to second and LF Steve Anderson drove in two with a double down the leftfield line.
Lake Erie stayed close with another run in the bottom of the third, but the Lakers scored two more runs in the fifth on two hits. RF Paul Young singled and Grice walked. Young moved to third on a fly out and Grice stole second, followed by a one-out single to right by senior SS Andrew Trepel to up the Laker lead to 5-2. GVSU added another run in the sixth on three hits. Yatch doubled to right with on out and scored on a Young single to center to up the Laker lead to 6-2. The Storm a pair of runs on two hits and a Laker error in the sixth, but GVSU pushed its lead back to 7-4 in the top of the seventh on just one hit. Trepel was hit by a pitch and stole second. 3B Dan Ponegalet sacraficed Trepel to third and C Zach Laupp drove home Trepel with a sac fly to right. Lake Erie scored a run in the seventh, but sophomore LHP Brad Zambron picked up his second save in as many days when he retired the final two batters with runners on first and third.
Yatch reached base four times and was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, while Young was 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Grice was 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored and Anderson was 2-for-4 with two RBI.
The Lakers scored again in the top of the first in game two as Yatch continued his hot hitting with a single to center. Yatch stole second with one out and scored on an RBI single from Anderson. Junior RHP Chris Whitney kept Lake Erie at bay through five innings, allowing no runs on six hits. GVSU upped its lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth on one hit and two Storm errors. Trepel singled and moved to second on a sac bunt from C Jared Cowan. 1B Giancarlo Brugnoni reached on error and Ponegalek walked to load the bases. Yatch lined out to left for the second out of the innings, but Young reached on a throwing error by the shortstop and Trepel scored, followed by walk to Grice that scored Brugnoni. LEC scored its only in the bottom of the sixth on two hits, but Zambron came in and shut the door with the bases loaded by getting a grounder to short.
GVSU broke the game open in the top of the seventh with nine runs on six hits. Brugnoni pushed a run across with a walk, while Ponegalek added an RBI single. Young added the big blow of the inning with a grand slam to right to give the Lakers 9-1 lead. Cory Phillips drove in the Lakers' 10th run and PH Blake Batteast drove in two runs with a double to center. The Lakers sent 13 batters to the plate in the seventh. Whitney picked up his first win on the year, yielding one run on eight hits in 5.2 innings of work. Bill Maple pitched a hitless seventh with two strikeouts.
Yatch and Anderson each collected four hits on the day, while Young drove in five runs on three hits. Five Laker pitchers walked just four batters, while the GVSU offense drew 14 walks on the day.
