Fourth-ranked Grand Valley State tallied a GLIAC baseball double-header sweep over Lake Erie College Saturday (Mar. 26) in Painesville, Ohio. Playing in tempatures that never reached 30 degrees, the Lakers claimed game one by a 3-1 score and game two 10-1. GVSU improves to 13-2 overall and 2-0 in GLIAC action. GVSU and Lake Erie will conclude the four-game set Sunday beginning at 12 noon.
In game one, senior RHP Joe Jablonski became the Lakers' all-time leader in pitching wins with 22 (22-6). Jablonski improved his record to 3-0 on the year as he yielded just three hits and one run in six innings of work. Jablonski struck out three and walked three. Junior 2B Garrett Yatch singled to center to open the game and stole second. Senior RF Paul Young then doubled to right center to score Yatch and give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. GVSU added another run in the top of the fifth as SS Andrew Trepel singled to center and stole second. Junior C Zach Laupp singled to center to score Trepel and give the Lakers a 2-0 lead. GVSU added another run in the top of the seventh on two hits and a Lake Erie error.
Derek Strzalkowski singled to left and sophomore DH Chris Rudenga walked. Trepel reached on a bunt down the third base line to load the bases. A failed pickoff attempt at first base allowed Strzalkowski to score from third and give the Lakers a 3-0 lead. Jablonski retired the first seven batters he faced and did not yield a hit until the top of the seventh when Lake Erie LF Brandon James singled to deep short. 1B Jae Leeworthy singled to left and C Pat Kilway walked to load the bases with no outs. DH Kyle Kemp singled to left to score James and pulled the Storm within two (3-1). Sophomore Brad Zambron came in for Jablonski with the bases loaded and no outs, but was able to get a strikeout and a 1-2-3 double play to end the game and pick up his first save of the year. Trepel was 2-3 with a run scored, while Young doubled twice. Yatch, Strzalkowski and Laup each tallied one hit for the Lakers.
GVSU jumped out quickly in game two with three runs in the first and another in the second. Young and CF Cody Grice each singled with one out and moved up one base each on a groundout by LF Steve Anderson. Senior 1B Torre Aguirre delivered a two-out, three-run homer to left to give GVSU a quick 3-0 lead. C Jared Cowan walked with one out in the second, stole second and came home on a single to center from Yatch. Rudenga opened the fourth by getting hit by a pitch and moved to second on a single from Trepel. Cowan sacraficed Rudenga to third and Trepel to second, followed by a sac fly from Yatch to score Rudenga and give GVSU a 5-0 lead.
Lake Erie scored its only run in the bottom of the fourth, but GVSU broke the game open with four runs on just one hit in the top of the fifth to take a 9-1 lead. Grice singled and stole second, followed by an Anderson walk. Pinch hitter Blake Batteast was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Brian Robinson came in as a pinch hitter and was also hit by a pitch to drive in Grice. Trepel and Cowan followed with back-to-back walks to score two runs and Yatch drove in his third run with another sac fly. Anderson doubled to center with one out in the sixth and moved to third on a passed ball. Strzalkowski grounded out to third to score Anderson and conclude the scoring.
Yatch was 1-3 with three RBIs, while Aguirre was 1-2 with three RBI. Grice was 3-3 with two runs scored. Junior Kyle Schepel improved to 3-0 on the year, yielding one run on four hits in six innings of work. Schepel struck out three and walked four. Junior Cory Rademacher gave up one hit in the seventh.
