SOMERS, Wisc. – No. 18 Wisconsin-Parkside had four players tally double-figure point totals as the Grand Valley State women’s basketball team fell to the Rangers, 73-60, on Saturday afternoon at DeSimone Gymnasium.
The Lakers drop to 1-2 on the season, while UW-Parkside improves to 4-1 on the year.
The first half saw four lead changes and five tie scores, as neither team was able to pull away. The Rangers took their biggest lead of the half, six, two times, the last at 18-12 with 9:58 to play in the opening 20 minutes.
Redshirt sophomore Kellie Watson (Ionia, Mich.) hit a jumper to spark an 8-1 run that gave the Lakers a 20-19 lead at 6:40, but the teams tied the score again, 22-22 with less than five minutes in the first. Timely three-pointers from senior Jasmine Padin (Wyoming, Mich.) and Watson gave GVSU a 28-27 lead heading into halftime.
The Lakers held onto the lead, going up by six, 42-36, at 15:04, but UW-Parkside did not let up, tying the game for the final time, 48-48, at 8:24 with two free throw shots.
GVSU was able to pull within one with less than five minutes remaining thanks to a Watson trey, 54-53, but UW-Parkside made 15 free throws and held the Lakers to just five points over the last three minutes to take the game.
Watson had a team-high 16 points off the bench including going 3-for-8 from behind the arc, while grabbing four rebounds. Junior Brittany Taylor (Livonia, Mich.) was the only other double-figure scorer, totaling 15 points, including a 7-for-7 outing at the line. Juniors Briauna Taylor and Alex Stelfox each added eight points, while Padie tallied seven.
The Lakers shot 43.1 percent from the floor, but were once again hampered by 15 turnovers, which the Rangers converted for 17 points. For the first time this season, GVSU was outrebounded and did not score any second chance points, while UW-Parkside added seven.
Jadee Rooney led all scorers with 25 points, while teammates Britany Beyer and Amy Selk put up 19 and 13, respectively. Kaitlyn Bettiga rounded out the high scorers with 11.
GVSU now plays host to Urbana (1-4) on Monday, Nov. 28 at 6 p.m. at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
