UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The No. 5 Grand Valley State women’s soccer team used two second-half goals to shutout Saginaw Valley State, 2-0, on a warm Sunday afternoon at the SVSU Soccer Complex.
GVSU continues on its five-game road swing, closing it out at Northern Michigan on Friday, Oct. 14 before traveling to Michigan Tech on Sunday, Oct. 16.
The Lakers improve to 11-0-2 overall and 10-0 in GLIAC play with only five more games remaining in the regular season, while the Cardinals fall to 4-6-1 overall and 3-6-1 in league play.
Despite outshooting SVSU 8-3 in the first half, GVSU failed to get on the board in the opening 45 minutes. The Lakers came out fast in the second half tallying the first goal of the game in the 51st minute from junior Kayla Addison’s (Southfield, Mich.) unassisted goal.
Grand Valley State added an insurance goal at 81:07 thanks to the team’s leading scorer, junior Ashley Botts (Beloit, Wisc.). Botts received a pass from classmate Maria Brown (Columbus, Ohio) and fired it into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. Botts now has 13 goals on the season and is ranked in the top five in the nation in total goals.
For the game, GVSU held a 24-12 shot margin, while taking nine corner kicks. The Laker defense did not give up a corner to SVSU.
Junior keeper Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) picked up three saves in her third straight shutout and seventh of the season. The Cardinals’ Laura Ivezaj tallied seven saves in the loss.
