MIDLAND, Mich. - The No. 5 Grand Valley State women's soccer team shutout Northwood, 4-0, on warm Friday evening at Dean Field. The Lakers now stay on the road to face Saginaw Valley on Sunday at 12 p.m.
The win keeps GVSU undefeated in GLIAC action at 9-0, while improving its overall record to 10-0-2. Northwood falls to 4-6 on the season and 3-6 in conference play.
Four different Lakers notched goals in the victory, but it was senior Erin Mruz's (Gurnee, Ill.) that proved to be the game-winner in the 32nd minute of action. Just her second goal of the season, Mruz found the back of the net off a ball played up the right side by sophomore Autumn Jacobs (Saline, Mich.) and beat NU keeper Rebecca Lipinski for the 1-0 lead.
GVSU did not waste time scoring the second goal of the game when just eight minutes later freshman Jenny Shaba (West Bloomfield, Mich.) crossed a great ball in front of the net to classmate Juane Odendaal (London, Ontario), who headed it in for the 2-0 advantage.
Sophomore Molly Streeter (Mississauga, Ontario) tallied her first goal of the season at 43:42, thanks in part again to Shaba. Shaba passed the ball to Streeter just outside the 18-yard box, who then fired it over the keeper's head to make it 3-0 heading into half time.
Notching her second goal of the season, senior Jessica Trost (Canton, Mich.) scored at the 47:52 mark. Mruz passed the ball to Trost who was positioned outside the box in the center of the field just in time to fire the ball from 25-yards out and sail it into the back of the net.
The Lakers outshot their opponent, 26-4, including allowing only one shot in the first half. GVSU also held a 10-3 margin in corner kicks.
Junior Chelsea Parise (Warren, Mich.) posted her sixth shutout of the season, making one save on the day, while Lipinski picked up five saves.
