Grand Valley State jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead and never looked back en route to a 35-7 road victory over Findlay Saturday (Sept. 25) afternoon. GVSU improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in GLIAC action, while Findlay falls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in GLIAC action. GVSU will remain on the road next Saturday (Oct. 2) at Tiffin for a 1:30 p.m. matchup.
GVSU scored on its opening possession as senior RB Justin Sherrod culminated an 8-play, 65-yard drive with a 12 yard TD run just 3:10 into the opening quarter. Senior QB Kyle McMahon completed 2-of-3 passes for 28 yards and the Lakers rushed for 47 yards on five carries during the drive.
Penalties plagued the Lakers on their next two drives to the tune of seven for 55 yards, despite driving inside the Oiler 35 yard line on both drives. However, GVSU scored 21 points in the second quarter, including 14 points in a span of just over a minute. McMahon hit junior tight end Tony Carreri with a 24 yard TD pass to conclude a 5-play, 59-yard drive that took 2:20 off the clock. Senior CB Rob Carlisle then picked off a pass on the Findlay's next possession and McMahon hit junior WR Greg Gay with a 16 yard TD pass on the first play. PK Jay Jandasek converted hit third PAT on the day and GVSU led 21-0 with 3:18 left in the half. GVSU special teams led to the Lakers' next score as Israel Woolfork blocked a Cameron Stevens that sophomore safety Jarrod Cox returned six yards for a score to build the Laker lead to 28-0 with just under a minute left in the first half.
Senior QB Marquel Neasman scored on a 7 yard TD run midway through the third quarter to conclude the Laker scoring, while Findlay scored on an 11 yard TD pass from Zach Tate to Dustin Zeilaskiewicz early in the fourth quarter.
The first team offense and defense yielded way to the reserves midway through the third quarter. The Laker starting offense produced 346 yards in just over two quarters, while the starting defense yielded 130 yards.
Special teams play was a key point for the Lakers as Jay Jandasek dropped five punts inside the Findlay 20 yard line, including three inside the five. Jandasek also hit all five of his PATs.
Seven different Lakers carried the ball and nine different Lakers caught passes. McMahon completed 12-of-17 passes for 182 yards and two TDs, while rushing for 36 yards on six carries. Redshirt freshman RB Hersey Jackson toted the ball 11 times for 57 yards, while Sherrod tallied 45 yards on six carries. Junior WR Greg Gay caught four passes for 77 yards and senior WR Ryan Bass hauled in two receptions for 35 yards.
The GVSU defense tallied five QB sacks (-29) and 11.0 tackles for loss (-45). Redshirt freshman Luther Ware tallied six tackles, a QB sack (-9) and a tackle for loss (-9), while junior CB Chris Huley notched six tackles and a tackle for loss. The Lakers picked off two passes and recovered a fumble.
