Box Score

Allendale, Mich. - #9 Grand Valley State continued their stellar week today with a 9-6 victory over Findlay to complete a 5-0 week in GLIAC play. Starting pitcher Kyle Schepel tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in seven innings of work, as he allowed only two hits and one run. Catcher Jared Cowan also continued his great hitting, going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI courtesy of a homerun and a double.

For the fifth game in their last six, the Lakers scored in the first inning, as a Cody Grice double to lead off the game resulted in an RBI for Brian Robinson in the next at-bat to put Grand Valley State up 1-0 early. Steve Anderson then hit a single up the middle to drive in Kyle Gendron and Cory Maguire, and after one inning, the Lakers were up 3-0.

Grand Valley State kept it going in the bottom of the second, as singles from Grice and Robinson led to a two-RBI double by Gendron to make it a 5-0 game.

Schepel was rolling until the third inning, having retired seven straight, including four straight strikeouts, before the Oilers got a homerun from catcher Alex Raymond with one out in the top of the third to make it 5-1. The Lakers responded with a homerun of their own in the bottom portion of the inning, as Cowan's two-run homer brought in Paul Young, who had doubled just before Cowan. The Lakers led 7-1, and pushed a couple more across in the bottom of the sixth inning to make it 9-1. Cowan doubled to start the inning off, and was driven in by a Chris Rudenga single. Rudenga was then driven in with a Maguire ground rule double into the right field corner.

Findlay made a run in the top of the eighth, pushing five runs across as they collected three hits and four walks in the inning to make it a 9-6 game. With one out in the inning, Joe Jablonski came in with a four-run lead and two men on for the save opportunity, and nailed down the last five outs to give the Lakers the victory.

Gendron and Anderson each had two RBI in the game along with Cowan, while Cowan, Rudenga, Maguire, Robinson, and Grice all had two hits each. Schepel's victory moved him to 4-2 on the season. Findlay was led by Jason Reitenbach and Alex Raymond who each went 2-for-4, while Reitenbach had two RBI and Raymond had a homerun.

Grand Valley State (22-5, 14-2 GLIAC) continues GLIAC play on Tuesday (Apr. 6) against rival Saginaw Valley State with a doubleheader slated to begin at 2 p.m. at the Laker Baseball Field.
