University Center, Mich. - #14 Grand Valley State swept Saginaw Valley State today in a GLIAC doubleheader, taking game one 6-0 and game two 5-1. Senior Jared Knuth threw a complete game three-hit shutout in game one, a victory which gave head coach Steve Lyon his 450th career win at Grand Valley State. Cory Rademacher also had a solid performance on the mound, throwing a complete game victory in game two.

In game one, the Lakers put together a run in the top of the second inning that started with Cory Maguire and Andrew Trepel singles to lead off the frame. After Torre Aguirre drew a one-out walk to load the bases, Zach Laupp fell about 10 feet short of a grand slam, driving a run in with a sacrifice fly to deep left-center field. Cory Phillips came up next and shot a single up the middle that brought home Trepel, giving Grand Valley State a 2-0 lead after two innings.

The Lakers added another run in the top of the third on a Trepel single down the left field line that scored Kyle Gendron, who had doubled earlier in the inning, giving Grand Valley State a 3-0 lead. The Lakers added two more runs in the top of the sixth and another in the top of the seventh, as Knuth allowed only one runner past second base in the game, and didn't allow a hit past the fifth inning, nailing down a 6-0 victory for Grand Valley State.

Knuth (4-2) went the full seven innings, allowing only three hits and three walks while striking out three. Trepel led the way on offense, going 3-for-3 with a run and two RBI, while Maguire and Gendron each had two hits in the game.

In game two, a pitcher's duel broke out, as Saginaw Valley State had only two hits through the first three innings, and the Lakers were held without a hit through the first three innings. The Lakers broke through in the top of the fourth, however, as Cody Grice singled to right field to lead off the inning and then stole second base before being driven in on a Gendron double to left field to give Grand Valley State a 1-0 lead.

The Cardinals scored their only run of the day in the bottom half of the fourth, as a Kyle O'Boyle single to right field scored Kevin Dore, who had walked to lead off the frame for Saginaw Valley State.

The big inning for Grand Valley State came in the top of the sixth, as Paul Young hit a two-out single to left field and then stole second, leading to an RBI for Dan Ponegalek on a single to center field, giving the Lakers a 2-1 lead. After advancing to second on a wild pitch, Ponegalek came around to score on a Jared Cowan bloop single to shallow right field to make it a 3-1 game. The next batter, Phillips, brought two runs in on a play that contained two errors. Phillips reached first on an overthrow and advanced to third as the ball rolled to the fence in foul territory, allowing Cowan to score. The first baseman for the Cardinals then overthrew the catcher at home as the ball sailed into the Saginaw Valley State dugout, allowing Phillips to come home from third base, making it a 5-1 game.

Rademacher (5-1) got the win on the mound in game two, going the complete seven innings and allowing five hits, one run, and four walks while striking out four. Gendron and Ponegalek each had two hits and an RBI in the game, and Cowan was 1-for-2 with a run and RBI.

The sweep moves the Lakers to 31-11 overall with a 21-8 mark in GLIAC play, while the Cardinals fall to 17-19 overall, 13-13 in the GLIAC. The two teams will play a nine-inning game Sunday (Apr. 25) at noon in University Center, and then follow that game with a seven-inning game to make up one of the games that were cancelled earlier this season due to rain.
