Detroit, Mich. - #13 Grand Valley State dropped a conference doubleheader against Wayne State today, falling 7-6 in game one in 11 innings, and dropping game two by a score of 4-1. Senior first baseman Cory Maguire had the biggest hit of the day, tying game one at six with a two-out three-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning, forcing the game to extra frames.
In game one, The Lakers got on the board first with a Chris Rudenga single to center field that brought in Andrew Trepel from second base to make it a 1-0 game. After Wayne State responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, they took the lead with an RBI single and a run that crossed after a wild pitch, giving the Warriors a 3-1 lead.
Grand Valley State took advantage of the same situation in the top of the fifth with a Maguire RBI single to center field and a Cody Grice run that scored on a wild pitch to tie the game back up at three.
Wayne State took the lead back in the bottom half of the fifth, pushing two more runs across off two one-RBI singles to make it a 5-3 game.
The Warriors added another run in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 6-3 game, but Grand Valley State used a big top of the seventh inning to extend the game. With two outs in the top of the seventh, Brian Robinson and Kyle Gendron each singled before Maguire came to the plate and hit a three-run homerun to center field to tie the game at six.
Wayne State would eventually outlast the Lakers, as a Paul LaMantia single to center field would score pinch-runner Brad Guenther, giving Wayne State the 7-6 victory.
Brad Zambron (4-2) took the loss for the Lakers, pitching 2.1 innings in relief and allowing three hits and one run while striking out three. Grand Valley State was led on offense by Maguire, who was 4-for-6 with one run and four RBI, including his sixth homerun of the year and his eighth double of the season.
In game two, Wayne State used a Michael Wiseman solo homerun in the bottom of the second and a three-run bottom of the third inning to go up 4-0, before the Lakers pushed their only run across in the top of the fifth with a Robinson single up the middle that scored Torre Aguirre. The Warriors wouldn't allow anything else to cross the plate, however, as they took the 4-1 decision.
Jared Knuth (2-2) took the loss on the mound, pitching all six innings and allowing nine hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out four. The Lakers were led on offense in game two by Aguirre's 3-for-3 performance with one run.
The losses drop Grand Valley State to 26-9 on the year with a 16-6 mark in the GLIAC. Wayne State is now 22-12 overall with a 16-3 record in GLIAC play. The Lakers are back in action on Saturday, April 17th, when they travel to Ashland to take on the Eagles in a doubleheader slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
