Romeoville, Ill. - #13 Grand Valley State (26-7) swept an in-region doubleheader today against Lewis University (20-20), taking game one 9-5 with the help of a Jeremy Trinkle two-run homer, the first of his career as a Laker, and dominating game two 8-0 behind the arm of Dan Holcomb, who threw a five-hit shutout to earn his first victory at Grand Valley State.

In game one, Cory Maguire got the scoring started with a two-out double to left field, scoring Cody Grice to put the Lakers up 1-0 after the top of the first. Lewis responded in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on a sacrifice fly with nobody out, but not being able to muster any more runs across the plate during the inning, as the first inning ended tied at one.

Grand Valley State broke out in the top of the second inning, as Paul Young scored on a wild pitch and Trinkle, Grice, and Chris Rudenga all doubled home one run each, as the Lakers went up 5-1.

The Flyers tried to come back, scoring one run in the bottom of the third and two more in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 5-4 game, but a Trinkle two-run homer to right field in the top of the sixth pushed the Laker lead out to 7-4. Grand Valley State got a couple more insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a Maguire solo homer and a Cory Phillips sacrifice fly to make it a 9-4 lead. Lewis pushed one run across in the bottom of the seventh, but reliever Brad Zambron shut the door after that as the Lakers took a 9-5 decision.

Kevin Schultz got the win for the Lakers on the mound, going six innings and allowing five hits, five runs (four earned), and striking out one to move to 2-0 on the season. Trinkle was 2-for-4 with two runs, three RBI, and his first homer of the year in the game, while Maguire was 3-for-3 with one run, two RBI, and a homerun of his own. Grice, Rudenga, and Phillips all had one RBI as well.

In game two, the Lakers again struck in the first, as Grice led the game off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and was brought home by a Brian Robinson single. Robinson himself would get brought in later off an Andrew Trepel sacrifice fly to make it a 2-0 game after one inning. Grand Valley State would go up 3-0 in the second inning with a Grice single that drove in Dan Ponegalek.

The Lakers would add two more in the top of the fourth, including a run off a triple steal in which Grice stole home, Rudenga stole third, and Anderson stole second but was then thrown out as he came off the bag. Three more were added in the top of the sixth off a Jared Cowan two-RBI single and a Torre Aguirre RBI single.

The story of the game, however, was Holcomb's dominating performance, as he threw a complete game shutout, allowing only five hits and walking none while striking out five for his first win of the season. Grice continued his multi-hit tear in the game, going 4-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Grice has now had at least two hits in four straight games and nine of his last 10, raising his batting average to .485 on the year.

The Lakers are back in action tomorrow (Wednesday, April 14th) as they travel to Wayne State to take on the Warriors (20-12, 14-3 GLIAC), who are currently leading the GLIAC. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.
