Midland, Mich. - #10 Grand Valley State split a doubleheader with Northwood for the second straight day, taking game one by a score of 8-3 behind the arm of Joe Jablonski, who threw all nine innings, before dropping game two 10-6. In game one, the Lakers jumped on top in the third inning as Brian Robinson, Kyle Gendron, and Cory Maguire all drove in a run during the frame to give GVSU the early 3-0 lead. Northwood responded with a run in the bottom half of the inning on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Lakers kept the pressure on in the fourth inning, as Cody Grice singled home a run and Robinson followed him with a single up the middle, scoring another. A Gendron triple in the next at-bat, his first three-bagger of the season, brought in Robinson and Grice, making it a four run frame for the Lakers and giving Grand Valley STate a 7-1 lead.
Northwood would add one each in the seventh and eighth innings, and the Lakers would add another in the eighth off a Gendron homerun, his fourth of the season, as Grand Valley State would take game one 8-3.
Jablonski (5-0) got the win for the Lakers, pitching all nine innings and allowing 12 hits, three runs (one earned), and striking out five. Dan Ponegalek also went 2-for-3 with two runs in the game.
In game two, Northwood pushed across one run in the top of the first to start the game, but Grand Valley State responded with two runs in the bottom of the first, as Gendron doubled in Grice to make it 1-1, and then Gendron scored on a passed ball later in the inning to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead.
Northwood's big inning came in the top of the second, as they capitalized on three Laker errors in the frame to push across five runs, all unearned, to go up 6-2. A Robinson double to centerfield in the bottom of the second scored Grice to make it 6-3, and a Gendron single up the middle scored Robinson to make it a 6-4 game as the Lakers attempted their comeback.
In the bottom of the third, Grand Valley State would tie the game at six after a Jared Cowan single brought in Andrew Trepel, and a Grice fielder's choice scored Paul Young.
Northwood broke through in the top of the fifth inning with three runs, two of them due to a Zach Lecker single up the middle that scored two, as the Timberwolves went ahead 9-6. Northwood added one more in the top of the seventh to make it a 10-6 game, but the Lakers wouldn't be able to keep pace as the Timberwolves took game two.
